Flambeaux
Albuquerque clarinet player Bob Gusch founded Flambeaux in 2013 to celebrate New Orleans style acoustic jazz. Bob was particularly enamored with the two-horn front line of clarinet and trombone, (rhythm provided by banjo and tuba). The band soon developed a swinging approach to a bunch of vintage tunes from the 1910s, 20s and 30s. Bob tragically passed away in 2023, which was of course devastating. Fortunately the band made friends with the incredible John Truitt who played with Flambeaux on soprano sax at Bob’s memorial concert. (Interestingly, the main New Orleans musical inspiration for both Bob and John was/is the legendary Sidney Bechet, who excelled on both clarinet and soprano sax.) Flambeaux moved into a new chapter, still swinging on the classic tunes. And then, just before his 83rd birthday, Wayne Shrubsall suddenly became unable to play banjo, after an amazing long life of studying, playing, recording, touring and teaching. He was a master. Luckily the band’s trombonist Micah Hood was friends with the multi-talented Jamie Harrison, who it turned out was nurturing a latent fascination with the banjo. Before long, Flambeaux was up and swinging again, still with founding member Mark Weaver on tuba, having evolved over the years but still joyfully feeding the flame that Bob lit.
